BENEFITS OF YOGA Several studies demonstrate that the practice of yoga has important health benefits, and Western doctors are increasingly recommending it for relaxation and exercise. Two studies showed yoga to be of great benefit in treating osteoarthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome. In both these complaints, the researchers found significant reduction of pain experienced by patients who practised yoga compared to patients who did not practise yoga. As yoga uses stretching and deep breathing, which helps patients relax, improves lymph drainage (removal of cellular waste from the bloodstream) and strength, it should theoretically be beneficial for most types of musculoskeletal problems. (Internet Health Library: Muscoskeletal Pain Research ) Other studies show that the practice of Hatha Yoga improves strength and flexibility and may help control blood pressure, respiration, heart rate, and metabolic rates. One study showed that the Yoga lifestyle intervention improved cholesterol rates, slowed progression and increased regression of coronary atherosclerosis in patients with severe coronary artery disease.(Positive Health: Updates...) |
